Preliminary research on the innovative lighting in the terminals of Cluj Avram Iancu International Airport
OLGA (hOLystic&Green Airport) Project involves four airports, respectively: Charles de Gaulle Airport, Milano Malpensa Airport, Zagreb Franjo Tuđman Airport and Cluj Avram Iancu International Airport.
The aim of OLGA is to reduce the environmental impact of aviation through a holistic approach. OLGA Project facilitates the collaboration with different partners and airports to strengthen the impact of research in the aviation sector.
In order to sustain the environmental transition within the airport, a preliminary research on the actual artificial lighting was implemented. Cluj Avram Iancu International Airport, in collaboration with Charles de Gaulle Airport, gathered information related to the lighting in the terminals. Charles de Gaulle Airport made an analysis of the existing terminal (Terminal 1 CDG), and their analysis was replicated to Cluj Airport. This research is going to provide an outlook on the travellers’ experience concerning the actual lighting in the terminals and their perspective on ecology lighting.
The activity took place in March 2022 at Cluj Airport and it was implemented by the people involved in OLGA Project, who distributed questionnaires to passengers. The addressed questions concerned both technical and environmental objectives of OLGA.
Through the technical objectives, a homogeneous level of illumination was proposed and the removal of dark areas along the route. Finally, providing a good quality of light with all types of materials and colors.
The environmental objectives concern the consumption reduction, minimizing maintenance, increasing the component warranty to reduce maintenance budget, reducing the volume of material and the number of components, and last but not least, developing an exemplary life cycle.
Moreover, the information provided by passengers is going to reveal the satisfaction regarding the artificial lighting in Cluj Airport terminals.
The research envisages the identity of Cluj Airport Terminals and its capacity to align to the standards of the European Commission Programme, with the purpose of improving the energy efficiency through the ecological lighting.
