Avram Iancu Cluj International Airport hosted the international workshop for presenting and disseminating the results of the European project OLGA – hOlistic & Green Airports

Cluj-Napoca, May 27, 2026 – Avram Iancu Cluj International Airport hosted the international workshop dedicated to presenting and disseminating the results of the European research and innovation project OLGA – hOlistic & Green Airports, one of the most important European projects dedicated to decarbonizing the aviation sector and developing green and sustainable airports.

The event brought together representatives of regional airports from Romania, local public authorities, research institutes and centers, academia, economic operators, and partners involved in airport activities. Its main objective was to promote the innovative solutions developed within the OLGA project to reduce the environmental impact of aviation.

Launched on October 1, 2021, under the Horizon 2020 – European Green Deal program, the OLGA project is coordinated by Groupe ADP (Aéroports de Paris SA) and gathers a consortium of 41 partners and 17 third parties from 12 European Union member states, including Romania, represented by Avram Iancu Cluj International Airport, COMOTI Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca City Hall, and the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca. The project has a total budget of approximately 34 million euros and a 60-month implementation period.

The OLGA project directly contributes to the European Green Deal objectives and supports the transition to climate neutrality by 2050 through the development and implementation of innovative solutions aimed at reducing CO₂ emissions, improving air quality, energy efficiency, sustainable mobility, and biodiversity protection in the aviation sector.

Within the project, 17 innovative environmental solutions have been developed, already demonstrated and implemented at the airports in Paris, Cluj, Zagreb, and Milan, with a high potential for international replication. Avram Iancu Cluj International Airport is among the airports that have practically implemented seven of these innovative solutions, actively contributing to reducing the carbon footprint and developing sustainable airport operation models.

The solutions implemented in OLGA target the optimization of airport operations and the landing and takeoff cycle (LTO), reducing emissions generated both by flight activities and ground operations by increasing the use of electric equipment and improving the energy efficiency of airport infrastructure. Additionally, the project helps improve passenger experience by creating a greener, more efficient, and environmentally friendly airport environment.

Avram Iancu Cluj International Airport’s active participation in the OLGA project supports the airport’s strategic objectives regarding sustainable development and achieving the status of a “green” airport within the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program, while also strengthening Romania’s position among European players involved in the sustainable transformation of aviation.

About the OLGA – hOlistic & Green Airports project

OLGA – hOlistic & Green Airports is one of the largest European research and innovation projects dedicated to the sustainable transformation of the aviation sector, funded by the European Union through the Horizon 2020 – European Green Deal program. The project brings together airports, airlines, research institutes, public authorities, and innovative companies collaborating to accelerate the transition to smart, energy-efficient, and low-carbon airports.

Coordinated by Groupe ADP, the project includes four European airports: Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, Milan Malpensa Airport, Zagreb Airport, and Avram Iancu Cluj International Airport. Through the solutions developed and tested within the project, OLGA directly contributes to achieving the European Union’s objectives for climate neutrality and the development of sustainable aviation across Europe.
