About the Project

The project "Expansion of the departure passenger terminal on the North side" - SMIS code 2014+ 155602 is co-financed by the European Fund for Regional Development through the Large Infrastructure Operational Program 2014 - 2020.

The Avram Iancu Cluj International Airport, an autonomous authority under the Cluj County Council, as a beneficiary of non-reimbursable funds through the Large Infrastructure Operational Program 2014-2020 and the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, as the Intermediate Body for Transport, signed on 6 April 2023, Financing Contract No. 219/06.04.2023 for the realization of the project "Extension of passenger departures terminal on the North side".

The implementation period is 24 months, respectively between 01.01.2022 and 31.12.2023, and the total value of the Financing Agreement is 365.708.900,80 lei, of which the value of the European Union co-financing is 129.618.899 lei.

The main objective of the investment is to expand the Passenger Departures Terminal, towards the North, both on the ground floor of the building and on its first floor, in the area of ​​boarding gates A1, A2, A3, intended for domestic flights and in the area of ​​boarding gates B1, B2, B3 , B4 intended for external flights. Following the implementation of the project, the departure terminal will be expanded by approximately 7.200 square meters and the aircraft parking platform by nearly 9.000 square meters, which will lead to increased processing capacity and passenger comfort. The new spaces will be equipped with state-of-the-art security devices of the C3 standard type, with two boarding gates for external flights and one boarding gate for domestic flights to be built.

The newly expanded terminal will ensure the appropriate performance of the specific activities of processing passengers and their luggage (registration, check-in formalities, security control, control of documents at the border, customs control, etc.), its processing capacity being dimensioned, so as to ensure the processing of passenger and baggage flows at peak times to meet future needs based on traffic results and forecasts.

 

By achieving the investment objective "Expansion of the Departure Passenger Terminal on the North Side", the following strategic objectives are pursued:

– Increase in passenger traffic;

– The socio-economic development of the area affected by the pandemic;

– Increasing the number of tourists and the sustainable development of the region;

- Attracting new air carriers.

The "Avram Iancu" Cluj RA International Airport, by achieving the investment objective, will have a significant social and economic role in Romania, especially in the Transylvania area, generating economic benefits for the entire region. The implementation of the project will determine the increase of local incomes through the emergence of essential facilities for the life of the population and for economic activities by ensuring the links of the population with the objectives of local and regional interest, of a commercial and touristic nature and attracting potential investors who choose this region for the development of some businesses, being directly favored by the existence and development of Cluj Airport.

In terms of the evolution of air traffic registered in the last period of time on AIAIC, by expanding the passenger terminal, the airport will be able to provide the infrastructure for a larger number of passengers. Through the proposed investment, in accordance with the objectives of environmental protection, the project will contribute to the objectives of increasing accessibility and regional mobility. Ensuring the infrastructure necessary to serve operations safely and in a short time will create new possibilities for increasing the number of operating frequencies or introducing new travel destinations to other regions in the country or abroad for passengers in the area of capture of Avram Iancu Cluj International Airport.
