In 2018, Avram Iancu Cluj International Airport benefited from European funds within the Spice Project (Synchronized PBN Implementation – Cohesion Europe).

The SPICE project is 85% co-financed by the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility program and runs from 17.02.2016 to 31.12.2020. The Romanian partners in the project are: the Association of Romanian Airports, the Romanian Civil Aeronautical Authority, ROMATSA, Blue-Air and RAS.

The Spice project is part of the implementation phase of the SESAR (Single European Sky) program aimed at increasing the efficiency of air traffic management and air navigation services by reducing the fragmentation of European airspace. The objective of the SESAR project is to modernize the European air traffic management system (air traffic management - ATM).

In 2018, Avram Iancu Cluj International Airport carried out both obstacle and maintenance studies. Thus, the Cluj airport benefited from the reimbursement of funds from the European Union through the Association of Airports in Romania, for the obstacle studies in a percentage of 40% of the 85% co-financing, following that in the following period the rest of the money will be reimbursed for the studies of obstruction and those for maintenance. Avram Iancu Cluj International Airport provides 15% of the cost value for obstacle and maintenance studies from its own funds. During 2018, the representatives of the airport, responsible for the implementation of the project, participated in several meetings organized on the subject of the Spice Project both in Bucharest and in Brussels.
