Project "Conformity of the beaconing and lighting system with the certification specifications of Regulation 139/2014", code SMIS 2014+ 157922, project co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund through the Large Infrastructure Operational Program 2014 - 2020
International Airport Avram Iancu Cluj, an autonomous municipality under the Cluj County Council, is implementing a new project with European funds, through the Large Infrastructure Operational Program 2014-2020, whose investment objective is to modernize the beaconing system on the airport movement surface.
The need for investment has as its main element the fact that the International Airport Avram Iancu from Cluj Napoca takes over 70% of the passenger traffic from the North-West region of Romania, in the context in which there are 200 other international airports within a radius of less than 5 kilometers, at Oradea, Satu-Mare, Baia Mare, Sibiu and Târgu Mureș.
Thus, the International Airport Avram Iancu Cluj is one of national importance, representing a hub for the northern half of Romania, being also the country's second airport after "Henri Coandă" Bucharest International Airport, in terms of passenger traffic.
The objective of the project is to modernize the beacon light systems of the airport movement surface, by replacing and additionally installing new lighting and guidance equipment for aircraft. Also, the project also includes the analysis of the software and hardware components of the beacon remote control, implicitly the upgrading of the existing remote control to the new configuration, through automatic monitoring, so that information is provided to the air traffic control tower, regarding any malfunction that would could affect the activity.
The completion of the implementation of the new beaconing system will ensure an increase in the level of safety and security of the operational activities carried out in the air operations area, both for the air operators and for the passengers of the International Airport Avram Iancu Cluj, in accordance with European and national regulations in the field of civil aviation.
Achieving this investment objective will allow the optimal dimensioning of the future airport infrastructure, to assimilate the increase in air traffic and the possibility of its subsequent expansion, with minimal costs, without closing air traffic and without affecting the comfort of passengers or airport staff.
Financing Agreement No. 238 for the achievement of the investment objective "Conformity of the beaconing and lighting system with the certification specifications of Regulation 139/2014", whose beneficiary is the International Airport Avram Iancu Cluj, was signed by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, as the Management Authority, on June 9, 2023.
The total value of the Financing Agreement is 18.296.445,59 lei, of which the amount co-financed by the European Union is 6.534.545,49 lei.
