PRESS RELEASE: Exercise to verify the applicability of the Emergency Action Plan in the event of a civil aviation accident at Avram Iancu Cluj International Airport
public relations2025-11-05T14:01:45+02:00November 5, 2025, Cluj-Napoca - Avram Iancu Cluj International Airport, an autonomous management body subordinated to the Cluj County Council, organized a complex training exercise whose objective was to verify and test the applicability Action Plan for Emergency Situations, in the event of a civil aviation accident.
The exercise, organized in accordance with national and international regulations in the field of civil aviation, was conducted under the coordination of Mr. David Ciceo, General Manager of Avram Iancu Cluj International Airport and had the following scenario:
"The captain of an A320 aircraft belonging to the airline X-AERO announces MAYDAY during the landing process. The aircraft left the runway after landing, and due to the damage to the landing gear, the fuselage and the planes of the aircraft suffered damage, causing it to be cut into two pieces. Columns of smoke are visible in the accident area and there are indications of a fire. There are no hazardous materials on board the aircraft, and the amount of fuel at the time of landing is 3 tons. Of the 100 passengers and 6 crew members, it is estimated that 25 people have died, 15 are seriously injured, 26 have minor injuries and 40 people do not require immediate medical attention.
The main objectives of the exercise consisted of training intervention personnel in the event of a civil aviation accident at the airport, consolidating intervention actions between institutions, companies, services and individuals involved in resolving emergency situations, as well as identifying possible difficulties in the intervention mode and remedying them in the event of a real emergency situation.
The alarm and intervention actions within the exercise were carried out in real time, involving approximately 1000 people, namely representatives of institutions with responsibilities in managing emergency situations, representatives of local and county authorities, representatives of institutions operating in the airport perimeter, airlines and handling companies, and representatives of the media.
The exercise was carried out safely and was successfully completed, without affecting air traffic.
