PRESS RELEASE: Avram Iancu Cluj International Airport will build a photovoltaic park with European funds

September 5, 2025 – Cluj-Napoca – International Airport Avram Iancu Cluj, an autonomous region subordinated to the County Council, was declared eligible by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure for European funding of a photovoltaic park.
Cluj Airport will build a photovoltaic park and energy storage capacities with non-reimbursable financing from Modernization Fund for energy efficiency in the transport sector.

The objective of the project is to produce electricity by harnessing the renewable source represented by solar energy. Cluj Airport will install over 8 photovoltaic panels on an area of 7500 hectares, with an installed power of 5 MW and a storage capacity of 12 MW. Following the implementation of the project, over 60% of Cluj Airport's electricity consumption will be ensured from its own green energy production, which means a budget saving of approximately 1 million euros/year and an annual decrease in greenhouse gases of approximately 3400 tons. CO₂.

The total value of the project is over 54 million lei (VAT included), of which over 30 million lei will come from non-reimbursable European funds.

Alin Tișe, President, Cluj County Council: "In the context of rising energy prices and budgetary constraints, energy independence is one of the major objectives we are focusing on. The investment in a photovoltaic park at Cluj Airport, from non-reimbursable funds, is a notable achievement and creates the premises for financial stability and achieving energy independence. We support this airport project, especially since Romania is part of the agreement to achieve climate neutrality."

David Ciceo, General Manager, Avram Iancu Cluj International Airport: "The implementation of the project will increase the airport's energy autonomy. We will invest in renewable energy generation capacities, in energy storage systems dedicated exclusively to self-consumption and in the installation of heat pumps. Our goal is to  "We reduce energy consumption from conventional sources, reduce CO₂ emissions and achieve energy autonomy."

Viorel Federiga, President of the Board of Directors: "We are particularly pleased that we have managed to obtain financing for investments in projects such as the construction of a photovoltaic park at Avram Iancu Cluj International Airport. It is an important step in the process of adapting to new international requirements. The photovoltaic park will allow the airport to cover a significant part of its own energy consumption and will ensure a significant reduction in costs."

In the efforts to reduce carbon emissions, Cluj International Airport has supplemented its fleet with another electric bus for transporting passengers to aircraft. It has a transport capacity of 110 passengers, has a battery that allows an autonomy of over 300 km, is equipped with audio-video surveillance systems and has a modern and ergonomic design, which ensures increased comfort for passengers. The new equipment cost 4,2 million lei.

The investments made for the construction of the photovoltaic park and the acquisition of electrical equipment are part of the transition process towards a green and sustainable airport.
